4 play therapy CEs (Contact hours)
Presented by Elizabeth Craft MSW, LCSW, RPT-S, CST
Description: Play therapists are increasingly including sandtrays as tools in their play therapy rooms. This workshop, based on Jungian Sandplay, is part of a series to enable play therapists to move their work from sand tray to Sandplay, as taught by Dora Kalff.
In this first 6 hour session we will focus on the fundamental elements of sandplay. We will explore the symbolism, healing powers and our personal experiences with the “earth elements,” through teaching, visuals, mindfulness exercises and hands on encounters with sand and water.
We will also learn more about the sandtray itself, and how this simple wooden box, painted a vibrant blue on the inside, provides a perfect sized space for the psyche to express itself in a contained way in the play therapy room.
Next will be an encounter with The Collection, exploring what miniatures should be available, and the energy carried by these “tiny heroes.”
Lastly, because all therapy is effective only through the relationship, we will explore the most important tool: the special role of the Therapist.
This day of learning will include a carefully crafted keynote, hands on experiences, the opportunity to create one’s own sandplay, and a case presentation.
Learning objectives: Participants will be able to:
1. Name 3 healing qualities of sand, and 3 healing qualities of water.
2. Explain 3 possible symbolic meanings of sand and water.
3. Identity the proper dimensions for a sandtray as designed by Dora Kalff
4. Identify 5-8 categories of miniatures that should be included in the sandplay collection
5. Differentiate how the role of the sandplay therapist might be slightly different from that of the play therapist.
6. Experience the elements of sand, water, the miniatures and the tray by creating one’s own personal sandplay in the witnessing presence of another.
7. Augment the work of the play therapist by adding Jungian sandplay therapy as an important tool to support healing.
